Diet for High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is the most common cardiovascular disease. Blood pressure refers to the force of blood pushing against artery walls as it courses through the body. Each time heart beats, it pumps out blood into the arteries. Blood pressure is highest when the heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest, between beats, the blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure.
Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms. Although a few people with early-stage high blood pressure may have dull headaches, dizzy spells or a few more nosebleeds than normal, these signs and symptoms typically don't occur until high blood pressure has reached an advanced - even life-threatening - stage.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80, where 120 is the systolic (maximum) blood pressure and 80 is the diastolic (minimum) blood pressure. When systolic blood pressure is above 140mm Hg or when diastolic blood pressure is above 90mm Hg, blood pressure is considered high. Hypertension may be caused by a variety of reasons such as: heredity, your genes, high salt in your diet, not being active, obesity, excessive alcohol intake and/or low potassium in your diet.
Hypertension is an all too common condition in today's hectic society. With many people being overweight, eating a poor diet, and experiencing high stress levels, blood pressure problems will likely remain a reality. Although some people are genetically predisposed to hypertension, there's plenty of evidence that a healthy life style and good nutrition can help during hypertension. Here are a few tips to get you started:
  • Vegetarians, in general, have lower blood pressure levels and a lower incidence of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Experts postulate that a typical vegetarian's diet contains more potassium, complex carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fat, fiber, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin A, all of which may have a favorable influence on blood pressure.
  • Eat plenty of fresh and frozen vegetables instead of canned vegetables. If canned vegetables are used, rinse them under running water for two to three minutes prior to cooking. Rinsing canned vegetables will decrease the sodium content by approximately 40 percent.
  • A high-fiber diet has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating many forms of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension.
  • Read the "Nutrition Facts" information on the label to find the sodium content of a packaged food. You will find the sodium content in milligrams for a single serving. The "% Daily Value" (sometimes shown as "% DV") for sodium is also given. The amount is based on 2,400 milligrams of sodium for the day.
  • Choose low-sodium products. Read the label and look for words such as, "unsalted," "no-salt-added," "reduced sodium," "sodium-free" or "low in sodium."
  • When eating out, taste your food before you add salt. Better yet, request that foods be prepared without added salt.
  • Weight reduction will help lower blood pressure. To help decrease calories from fat, consume low-fat or fat-free products.
  • Take a diet that is rich in high potassium foods (vegetables and fruits) and essential fatty acids. Daily intake of potassium should total 7 grams per day. The diet should be low in saturated fat, sugar and salt. In general, a whole food diet emphasizing vegetables and members of the garlic/onion family should be consumed.
  • Consume adequate calcium by including low-fat dairy products in your diet three times per day.

Beneficial Vegetables and Spices for Hypertension

A number of common vegetables and spices have beneficial effects in controlling hypertension. Incorporate these into your cooking:
  • Celery (ajmud): Oriental Medicine practitioners have long used celery for lowering high blood pressure. There are some experimental evidence that shows that celery is useful for this. In one animal study, laboratory animals injected with celery extract showed lowered blood pressure. Eating as few as four celery stalks a day was found to be beneficial in lowering blood pressure in human beings. However, celery does contain sodium and other compounds that can have negative effects when large amounts are ingested.
  • Garlic (lahsun): Garlic is a wonder drug for heart. It has beneficial effects in all cardiovascular system including blood pressure. In a study, when people with high blood pressure were given one clove of garlic a day for 12 weeks, their diastolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced. Eating quantities as small as one clove of garlic a day was found to have beneficial effects on managing hypertension. Use garlic in your cooking, salad, soup, pickles, etc. It is very versatile.
  • Onion: Onions are useful in hypertension. Two to three tablespoons of onion essential oil a day was found to lower the systolic levels by an average of 25 points and the diastolic levels by 15 points in hypertension subjects. This should not be surprising because onion is a cousin of garlic.
  • Tomato: Tomatoes are high in gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), a compound that can help bring down blood pressure.
  • Broccoli (hari phoolgobhi): Glucoraphanin, also known as sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS), a naturally-occurring compound found in broccoli sprouts and broccoli, help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
  • Carrot: Carrots are high in potassium, which can help prevent and control high blood pressure. They are also high in beta-carotene, which studies show can reduce the risk of heart disease leading to high blood pressure. Carrot juice helps to maintain normal blood pressure by regulating heart and kidney functions. A recommended dose is a 240 ml blend of one part celery juice, one part carrot juice and one part water, taken at least once a day.
  • Saffron (kesar): Saffron contains a chemical called crocetin that lowers the blood pressure. You can use saffron in your cooking. (It is a very popular spice in Arabic cooking.) You can also make a tea with it. Many Indians add a pinch of saffron in the brewed tea to give a heavenly flavor. Unfortunately, it is very expensive.
  • Assorted spices: Spices such as fennel (saunf), oregano (ajwain), black pepper (kali mirch) and basil (tulsi) have active ingredients that are beneficial in hypertension. Use them in your cooking.
The link between hypertension and diet is irrefutable. Generally speaking, making small changes to one's diet is one of the best ways of dealing with something as unspecified in origin as hypertension, and natural treatment of the condition addresses that which contributes to hypertension.

  • Maida in form of white-bread, nan, pizza, burger etc should be avoided.
  • All sugary products, juices and very sweet fruits like chikoo (sapota) should be avoided.
  • Corn flour, white rice, fried potatoes, too much of dairy and eggs should be avoided.
  • Avoid roasted peanuts and too much tea/coffee as they decrease the nutrient absorption and act as a diuretic. However, raw sprouted peanuts are fine.
  • Cut down too much of butter, ghee, oils etc as a high concentration of fat in the food tends to decrease the insulin action on the cells.

Things to be done:

  • Use a judicious mix of poly-unsaturated oils like safflower/corn and mono-unsaturated oils like olive oil/rice bran oil while cooking.
  • A lot of herbs help to improve the insulin response like karela (bitter melon) (karela juice can be consumed as it has plant insulin), methi seed sprouts, neem, jamun fruit etc. All these are also available as a dried powder which can be taken twice a day.
  • Garlic is like a boon for diabetics. Besides being useful in decreasing cholesterol it also lowers blood sugar. It is also rich in potassium so it replaces the potassium lost in the urine of diabetics. It also has zinc, sulphur and manganese which is also beneficial in diabetics.
  • A high fiber diet is the cornerstone of treatment of most diseases and specially insulin related disorders. An interesting finding is that during the world war when all British nationals were eating whole wheat flour, the incidence of diabetes fell by 50%! One can eat whole wheat porridge, whole wheat bread and oats as it contains soluble fiber which is very good for diabetes, cholesterol and obesity. Whole-grains are also rich in chromium which is mostly deficient in diabetics.
  • Soya bean is excellent for polycystic ovary and diabetics due to lecithins and can be eaten as a mixed atta (soya atta), tofu, tempeh, miso soup, nuggets, granules etc.
  • Potassium is found in vegetable broths and peanuts (Prefer to eat sprouted peanuts).
  • Other low sugar/low glycemic index diet foods are black channa, legumes, butter milk, turmeric and amla.
Diabetes is a health risk it is just not worth ignoring. Changing your lifestyle can change your future and protect you from the hazards of diabetes.

Kegel Exercise For Married

Pubococcygeus or "PC" muscles which form the floor of the pelvis are just like other muscles. Pelvis Exercise can make them stronger. For just 5 minutes, three times a day can improve your bladder control .

Who Need to do Kegel ?

1.  Woman who gave birth.

          After woman gave birth, size of vagina will change and the vagina wall lost it elastic. Both party will experience less pleasure because of loose vagina.

2.  Woman who experience stress incontinence.

          Your pc muscles are used to support your bladder. If you have a weak pelvic muscle, stress incontinence occur. Whenever pressure increased in your abdomen (laughing, sneezing or coughing), urine leak from your bladder. Stress incontinence is very common. 50% of all women have occasional incontinence and 20% of woman age over 75 experience everyday stress incontinence.

Locate the PC Muscle :

1.  Sit down on a toilet. Start peeing and stop the flow of urine midstream for few seconds. Then release the flow. Repeat few times until you find the right muscle. The muscle you used to stop the urine is the pelvic floor muscle.

2.  Lie down and put your finger inside your vagina. Tighten muscle around our finger as if holding back urine. If you feel your finger being squeezed, then you have located the right muscle.

Tips for Kegel :

1)  Don't squeeze other muscle. Your anal and abdomen muscle should be relax. If you feel other muscle pulling, you will need to start from step one to locate your PC muscle.

2)  Breath slowly and deeply. Breathe in when you squeeze and breathe out as you relax. If you experience headache, you are tensing your chest and holding your breath.

3)  Put your hand on your abdomen. If you feel any movement, you are using your abdominal muscle as well. You should isolated your vaginal exercise from any other muscle. Use your hand to test if you are using other muscle.

4)  You can do Kegel anywhere. No one can tell when your are squeezing your PC muscle. You can do Kegel when you work, drive or watching TV.


The aim of Kegel exercises is to improve muscle tone by strengthening the pubococcygeus muscles of the pelvic floor. Kegel is a popular prescribed exercise for pregnant women to prepare the pelvic floor for physiological stresses of the later stages of pregnancy and vaginal childbirth. Kegel exercises are said to be good for treating vaginal prolapse and preventing uterine prolapse in women and for treating prostate pain and swelling resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis in men. Kegel exercises may be beneficial in treating urinary incontinence in both men and women Kegel exercises may also increase sexual gratification.

A Kegel exerciser :

A Kegel exerciser is a medical device designed to be used by women to exercise the pubococcygeus muscle (also called the PC muscle). There are three main types: barbells, springs, and rubber bulbs. The barbells (or vaginal barbell) can be used as a vaginal exerciser or as a vaginal dildo or sex toy. Made of smooth, polished solid stainless steel, it is cylindrical in shape, with a rounded bulge at each end. They typically weigh one pound (454g) and measure approximately 6¾ inches (17.1 cm) in length with a diameter of one inch (2.5 cm) at the widest part. Being made of stainless steel, vaginal barbells are nonporous and can be wiped clean with a cloth moistened with mild soap and water. Spring devices are made of plastic, with removable springs to allow progressive resistance. These allow pressing directly against resistance. An advantage of rubber bulb devices is that they provide visual feedback (via a gauge) of how much pressure is being applied.

Benefits for women :

Factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, aging, being overweight, and abdominal surgery such as cesarean section, often result in the weakening of the pelvic muscles. This can be assessed by either digital examination of vaginal pressure or using a Kegel perineometer. Kegel exercises are useful in regaining pelvic floor muscle strength in such cases.
 Urinary incontinence :

The consequences of weakened pelvic floor muscles may include urinary or bowel incontinence, which may be helped by therapeutic strengthening of these muscles. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that "PFMT [Pelvic floor muscle training] be included in first-line conservative management programs for women with stress, urge, or mixed, urinary incontinence...The treatment effect might be greater in middle aged women (in their 40's and 50's) with stress urinary incontinence alone...".

  Pelvic prolapse :

The exercises are also often used to help prevent prolapse of pelvic organs. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that "there is some encouragement from a feasibility study that pelvic floor muscle training, delivered by a physiotherapist to symptomatic women in an outpatient setting, may reduce severity of prolapse".

  Benefits for men :

Though most commonly used by women, men can also use Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises are employed to strengthen the pubococcygeal muscle and other muscles of the pelvic diaphragm. Kegels can help men achieve stronger erections and gain greater control over ejaculation. The objective of this may be similar to that of the exercise in women with weakened pelvic floor: to increase bladder and bowel control and sexual function.
 Incontinence :

Regarding postprostatectomy urinary incontinence, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by the Cochrane Collaboration found that "there may be some benefit of offering pelvic floor muscle training with biofeedback early in the postoperative period immediately following removal of the catheter as it may promote an earlier return to continence".

  Sexual function :

 Kegel workouts can provide men with stronger erections. Research published in 2005 issue of BJU International, have shown that pelvic floor exercises could help restore erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction. There are said to be significant benefits for the problem of premature ejaculation from having more muscular control of the pelvis. 

It is also possible that strengthening the pelvic floor may allow some men to achieve a form of orgasm without allowing ejaculation, and thereby perhaps reach multiple "climaxes" during sexual activity.In men, this exercise lifts up the testicles, also strengthening the cremaster muscle, as well as the anal sphincter, as the anus is the main area contracted when a Kegel is done. This is because the pubococcygeus muscle begins around the anus and runs up to the urinary sphincter.

Body Mass Index

The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a statistical measure of body weight based on a person's weight and height. Though it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is used to estimate a healthy body weight based on a person's height. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostic tool to identify weight problems within a population, usually whether individuals are underweight, overweight  or obese.

Body mass index is defined as the individual's body weight divided by the square of his or her height.
The formulae universally used in medicine produce a unit of measure of kg/m2.
 BMI can also be determined using a BMI chart, which displays BMI as a function of weight (horizontal axis) and height (vertical axis) using contour lines for different values of BMI or colours for different BMI categories.

BMI provided a simple numeric measure of a person's "fatness" or "thinness", allowing health professionals to discuss over- and under-weight problems more objectively with their patients. However, BMI has become controversial because many people, including physicians, have come to rely on its apparent numerical authority for medical diagnosis, but that was never the BMI's purpose; it is meant to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals with an average body composition.  

For these individuals, the current value settings are as follows: 

  • a BMI of 18.5 to 25 may indicate optimal weight
  • a BMI lower than 18.5 suggests the person is underweight  
  • while a number above 25 may indicate the person is overweight
  • a BMI below 17.5 may indicate the person has anorexia nervosa or a related disorder; 
  • a number above 30 suggests the person is obese 
  • over 40, morbidly obese).

   9. Two basins large enough for foot bath


   1. Acetone

   2. Liquid soap or shampoo

   3. Luke warm water

   4. Antiseptic lotion

   5. Oil or cream

   6. Nail polish

   7. Foot powder

   8. Hydrogen peroxide


   1.Remove the old nail polish using acetone with lotion

   2. File the nails and cut the nails if necessary.

   3. Place both the feet in Luke warm water containing liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide.

   4. Clean the foot using nail brush, foot scrapper and pumice stone.

   5. Remove the foot from the basin and clean thoroughly using a soft towel.

   6. With a cotton dipped in Antiseptic lotion and with the help of an orange stick apply the lotion under the
        free edge of each nail

   7.Buff the cuticle to soften the cuticle

   8.Loosen  the cuticle back gently

   9.Massage the legs for five minutes

  10.Apply the first coat of nail polish and allow it to dry and then apply the second coat

Anti Aging Tips

1. Use UV screening cosmetic products

  • If you protect your skin from the sun’s rays only in the summer, when you’re sunbathing, you must know that this singular habit isn’t an effective barrier against wrinkles. 
  • Sun exposure is the main factor of skin aging. 
  • Some experts actually estimate that about 80% of aging is due to sun effects. Even more, sun exposure can cause skin cancer after the age of 50. 
  • Protection must be adapted depending on each type of skin. People with very light skin color need to use UV screening creams all year round. 
  • If you’re using these kind of products daily there’s a chance that your skin will have less wrinkles or sun-caused spots.

2. Eat fruits, vegetables and fish every day

  • Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and you’ll do your skin a very big favor! Lacking vitamins is the next major cause of body deterioration. 
  • You must pay attention to your meals more often, by that meaning you have to supply it with antioxidants (vitamins A, E, C and selenium), zinc and copper. 
  • You need a daily quantity of 60 miligrams of C vitamin (about as much as an orange has). It is recommended to give up sweets, meat and fat-rich food.

  • Alcohol in moderate quantities isn’t as harmful as tobacco is, unless there’s strict recommendation against it from your doctor.

5. Take it easy!

  • It has been proven that chronic stress increases the aging process' speed. Don’t forget the 3 eights rule: have 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work and 8 hours of relaxation each day. It sounds impossible, right?
  • Try yoga, meditation, massage or aromatherapy. You can use oils that create a peaceful sensation such as lavender. 
  • Can't get enough sleep? You should try harder, otherwise your efficiency at work will suffer, you’ll do a lot of mistakes and you'll get old quicker. 
  • Try harder to spend quality time with your friends, in a relaxing environment. Laughter has its benefits!

Head and neck circles

Stand up straight. Without moving your shoulders, slowly move your head and neck
in a wide circle. Do this half a dozen times.

Arm swings

Stand up straight with legs apart and both arms stretched straight out in front of you, at chest level. Without moving your hips, swing your arms (parallel to the floor) as far to the left as you can - and then to the right. Do this 20 times.

Shoulder circles

Stand up straight with legs apart and arms at your sides. Without moving the rest of your body, circle your left arm backwards. Repeat this with your right arm. Do this half a dozen times.

Forward stretches

Stand up straight. Place hands palms down on the front of your thighs. Keeping your legs straight, lean forwards and slowly slide your hands down your legs, as close to your ankles as possible without straining. Then move them back up your
legs and finish by holding your arms straight up above your head. Repeat this half a dozen times.

Side stretches

Stand up straight, with legs apart and arms at your sides. Without moving your legs, slowly bend sideways to the left, allowing your left hand to slide down the side of your leg, as far as possible without straining. Slowly return to the
start position and repeat on right hand side. Do this half a dozen times per side.

Leg swings

Stand up straight with your weight on your right leg. Place your right hand on a chair or table, for support. Swing your left leg forwards and backwards, in a pendulum motion. Do this 20 times, then repeat the exercise with your right leg.

Thigh stretches

Sit on the floor with your legs stretched straight out in front of you. Place your hands on the top of your thighs and slide them down your legs as far as possible without straining. Return to the start position and repeat 10 times.
Keep the whole exercise as slow and as relaxed as possible.

Leg raising

Lie on your stomach with your legs straight and your arms by your sides. Slowly lift your left leg off the floor, as high as possible without straining. Do it slowly - do not jerk your leg upwards. Then slowly lower your leg. Repeat the
exercise with your right leg. Do this half a dozen times, per leg.

Running on the spot

Stand up straight with arms relaxed. Run on the spot for 2 minutes. As you do so, try to keep the whole of your upper body as relaxed as possible. Allow your arms to bounce freely at your sides.

Dance to music

As an alternative to running on the spot, put on your favorite CD and get moving! But avoid jerky movements. Try to move easily without straining your muscles. 


Never overdo exercise!

  • Exercise shouldn't be a temporary fad. It should be something you do for life.

Nobody knows exactly, where
or when, the first cup of tea was brewed. According to folklore, Emperor "Shen
Nung" who reigned over China in 2732 BC discovered the stimulating effect of
tea accidentally when wild tea leaves fell into his pot of boiling drinking

Chinese have probably been
drinking tea in some form or the other since the fourth century AD and
considering that wild tea grew in many parts of Assam, it is not unknowingly
that tea drinking in India too is as old as in China. The raw material for tea
manufacture normally consists of two young leaves and an unopened leaf bud-the
famous "two leaves and a bud" formula, but, plucking of longer shoots containing
3 or even 4 leaves is not uncommon. The freshly harvested tea shoots can be
processed into the various kinds of tea, namely,black tea, green tea, oolong tea
and instant tea. In the manufacture of black tea(the usual tea that we
drink),the material undergoes "fermentation" while in the production of green
tea, delicate and subtle in flavour,fermentation is purposely omitted.Oolong tea
leaves get an intermediate treatment,considered to be "semi-fermented".Instant
tea,like instant coffee,is a dehydrated product containing only the soluble
constituents of tea.

There is hardly any drink that is not a food too, in terms of calories it
provides-tea is no exception. A cup of tea, containing 2 tbsp of milk and a tsp
of sugar, yields about 40 calories. Milk contains casein, which makes the tannin
in the tea insoluble, thus removing some of its astringency(acidic effect).Apart
from the milk and sugar generally added, the tea infusion contains marginal
quantities of vitamins and minerals, but no significant quantities of
extractable proteins, carbohydrates or fats.

Tea is fairly rich in most of the B group vitamins. Apart from these, it is also
a good source of vitamin E and K and Beta-carotene (changes into vitamin A in
our body).Tea contains traces of minerals like Copper, Flouride and Manganese
too. Fluoride helps in avoiding cavities in the teeth.

The accumulating scientific
data on tea and its constituents - the vitamins, caffeine and tannin- and on its
antibacterial activity provides a new picture of this popular beverage. Over the
past few decades, the list of physiological disorders for which tea is
contra-indicated has been steadily decreasing. On the other hand, caffeine is
sometimes prescribed therapeutically for the treatment of hypertensive headaches
and tea is a legitimate means of supplying this medication. Tannin destroys
bacteria and virus, thereby inhibiting the growth of dental plaque. But at the
same time, tannin inhibits the absorption of iron, calcium and zinc from the
food, when tea is consumed along with food.
